Coffee and Other Thoughts

Fog swirls, dancing ghosts outside my window.  People appear suddenly between the flowing dancers, shocking in their temporary three dimensionality.

Musing here in yet another coffee-shop on yet another continent in yet another country. Can only imagine what the watchers think. Another page, another chapter, another life and window. So many ways to look out at the world.

Conversation flows around me, fitfully, with my own imagined meanings. Fragments infused with alternate lives, ideas and events. Bubbles of other universes bumping gently by and bouncing off, briefly noted then quickly forgotten.  The chance conversation of passing strangers seems meaningless to my future.

Or, is it. I wonder.  My mental bumbles in the world of chaos theories and quantum physics cause me to question the certitude of any given moment. My mind stretches as far into infinity as it can before snapping back with the pain of a rubber band.  The connections and changes that each bump with another life create. The unseen ripples in the invisibly connected Field.

We have been appalled by the news from Copenhagen.  A crisp, spring day, people with coffees, croissants and children taking their ease and talking. Discussing whatever one does in any coffee shop, in any part of the world. Family, work, life events. The little sparks that make every life individual. Sitting and enjoying the blissful oblivion of an every day, day. In a moment, it is gone. Shattered beyond understanding. Conversations that will never conclude, orders never placed, people never met. The innocence of the coffee cup destroyed by a rain of gunfire.

I am not there. Most of the world is not there. It is a flash in our virtual worlds.  It is "over there".  Another time, place and coffee shop.  Here, my croissants are still warm, my cup un-shattered, the conversation continuing to ebb and flow.  There is no blood on the floor...

But.  But, I argue this is not so.  I argue that the ripples that have already begun from that moment, in that other coffee shop, are creating future events I dare not imagine in detail.  Grey is a shade of thought fading by the day. The lines are no longer being drawn in chalk, but painted in black.  Us and them.  History becomes a repetitive replay.

We cannot deny our humanity. The rage and pain that can be born of loss. Violent loss. But, do we dare remember and retain our humanity? Stand strong, together, against those who would destroy not just us, but the fundamental centre of our being.  Refuse the hate. Refuse to become historical partners in blood. It Is still a choice. It is still our choice.

How do we defeat senseless hate? Refuse to paint the world in black and white. Order a coffee, turn to the table beside you and pull up a chair to share with a stranger.  Do not be afraid.   Strangers become friends every day.

Come, share my coffee...
