Shades of Blue

Spent the past few hours endeavoring to do some laundry bits..After all, going to a foreign country and teaching 200 kids is not enough of a challenge. Besides, the usual "dobi" washer-man seems to have moved his wagon to alternate alleys.  So, with the advice of a neighbor, purchased a small blue bottle of "Ujala" which promised to make my whites Super White.  We like that!  Super white sounds pretty Super. But, with Murphy lurking under the kitchen sink, alas and woe-despite a myriad of hot rinses it turned my whites a lighter shade of Blue!
This was of great amuesment to the monkeys, who after I had hung them out to dry, promply came clambering down, grabbed two shirts off the line and took off like streakers across a football field... Shady blue must be an irresistable fashion statement for monkeys!  At this juncture I realized that the Laundry Gods were otherwise occupied and the best thing to do was have some chai and enjoy the sunshine.

Had a lovely day in Lucknow, visiting Nawabs' palaces, riding rickshaws past the river and eating biriyani. The beautiful, spiraling buildings of Lucknow were built by invading Persians, who settled and created a Muslim state.  The scent of Middle East spices carries on the river breezes like memories from the heart, and there is an air of dilapadated elegance throughout the city.  Mosque spires pierce the blue skies and the songs of the mullahs float over the parks like faraway lullabyes. In the dark Portrait Gallery a guide introduced us to the Nawabs who used to rule this little kingdom and demonstrated the "moving" paintings.Even in death, the Nawabs watch over their city..... Little Persia, the past still present and  nestled in the heart of Northern India.

With some reluctance,  boarded the late bus back, having missed the one returning train,  and proceeded for the four hours to have our bones very throughly shaken and our bottoms severly trounced as the bus careened throught the pitch dark night. With perfect faith in Any available god, we closed our eyes and tried to nap.   Knew we were close when the fogs started to slip into the door and windows of the bus and the violent swerves became dramatic and sudden stops for unseeable cows, bicycles and anything else alive that dared to be out there.

And, so, our next adventure, next week will be to New Delhi.  Three hours train to Lucknow, then overnight to reach New Delhi in the morning...Rumour has it, we will have a bed (? define bed please) and some chai with the sunrise over the city.
Signing off- the Lakhimpur Report, Just another day in -ummmmm, Paradise?
