Just a Ray of Sunshine
After weeks of weeping grey skies and spring despaired of, blue skies dome overhead. That beautiful Madonna blue that comes from touching the skirts of tall mountains. Lefkara lace clouds waltz around Lutheran Church spires. From trench coats and umbrellas to riotous sun dresses and sandals. Instant fashion mayhem. Munich weather keeps one guessing and if waiting for a proverbially late SBahn train, occasionally, cursing. Why they can't make enclosed waiting platforms, in a state that gets snowbound, I do Not understand. Brrrrrrrr.
Have come to various observances of the Bavarian species, since our sojourn here. Have learned to keep firmly out of the bike path, in fear of permanent loss of limbs, that "Bier" outranks coffee at all hours and Starbucks is "not as we know it", they bucked the traditional model.... MickyD's menu is slanted towards pomme frits vs fries and along with my Deutshe Kurse, am picking up some Turkish delight on the side. Food, ladies, FOOD...
Experience has taught that the first 6 months in a new place tend to be the hardest. Add a different language and culture to the mix and there are sure to be tears. We have passed our initiation period, but remain flummoxed by it all, still. It was easier wandering around a village in deepest, darkest India running from monkeys, or, evading pythons and dinner plate sized spiders in Oz. Here, it all seems familiar....we convince ourselves it Is familiar....yet...there is an elusiveness that carries a heavy echo from the past. A current that passes through the city we cannot tap and understand. A formality that eludes bridging.
Today, I am basking in the sun, laptop in - Lap. On my tiny shared balcony. Appropriate. Have been invited to submit a legal white paper for the Heidelberg 2013 Conference. Legalize blather at it's best, on my favorite and much delved into subject of Hague Conventions. Whoopppeee! Articles, laws and critiques fly off the keyboard. I restrain myself from the odd hilarious commentary. We Are Serious people now!. Well, at least for the duration of the paper. Due in four days, five pages and footnotes still to go.. Inshallah, Gott, Krishna, Wotan and all the assorted gods and goddesses are perched on my screen observing, and, being Gods and Goddesses, laughing their heads off. Ooops, there goes another one, falling off the edge..Must be precarious balancing on these screens. Serves them right for laughing! No! I didn't mean it! Really! Well, maybe just a little.... :)
Will shoo them off in your direction. Send them back with lots of coffee and oh, yes, chocolate, of course!
And if you see Murphy, keep him busy....
